Autumn is a great time for roses in South Australia. The Adelaide Botanic Garden will be buzzing with excitement over the weekend, 15-16 April, as exhibitors have staged their best rose blooms and eagerly awaited the champion prizes being revealed. There will be the usual friendly debates among competitors about who performed well, above all their individual competitive desire satisfied until the next show. However, the real winners are the public who come to see the sheer exuberance of the flowers, known for their charm, beauty and fragrance. Its not surprising the rose is “Queen of all flowers”.

The Autumn Rose Show will be staged by the Rose Society of South Australia at the Noel Lothian Hall, Adelaide Botanic Garden, on Saturday, 15 April, 11am to 4pm and Sunday 16 April, 10am to 4pm where visitors will see great examples of quality roses.

Roses are a favourite choice for the garden because they are easy to grow and maintenance is relatively simple. A visit to the Rose Show is also an opportunity to learn more and get some rose growing advice from the experts.

While at the Adelaide Botanic Garden, there is another competition being run by the National Rose Trial Garden of Australia, known as the People’s Choice Award. The public is invited to participate between 10am and 4pm, 15-16 April, simply by choosing their 5 favourite roses in the trial.  Roses are entered by local, interstate and overseas breeders and planted in the trial garden for two years where they are regularly assessed by professionals, rose society and industry members. The People’s Choice event is held at the completion of the two-year trial.

The National Rose Trial Garden is located within the International Rose Garden in the north-eastern corner of the Adelaide Botanic Garden. The nearest entrance is via Hackney Road.

The public is asked to vote for their top five roses in order of preference. The results provide an excellent insight for the rose breeders, introducers, growers and retailers as to the most popular varieties. As an incentive for the public, the Trial Garden’s sponsors will be donating a very worthwhile prize to the person most accurately selecting the top-rated roses.
