Shrub Rose (Registered as Floribunda)
(KORuteli)
‘Summer Memories’ was bred by Tim Hermann Kordes in Germany in 1992 and was introduced in Australia by Treloar Roses in 2011.
Named Best Shrub and Silver Medal winner in 2010 at the NRTGA Awards and with many Gold and Silver Awards internationally, this rose is a proven top performer. It has been highly acclaimed for its quick repeat flowering, dense bushy growth, fragrant old-fashioned style blooms and excellent disease resistance.
Rose Breeders around the world have concentrated on breeding healthy shrub roses in response to a growing demand for nostalgic looking roses which combine the qualities of old world roses with the repeat flowering, wide colour range and improved disease tolerance of modern roses. These shrub roses continue to increase in popularity around the world.
‘Summer Memories’ has large, creamy white cupped flowers (40 to 50 petals) with a light fragrance produced in clusters of 4 to 6 blooms per stem. The bush has upright growth to 1.2m tall and 0.80m wide with healthy, semi-glossy, leathery foliage.

Floribunda
(Jacfumco)
‘Sweet Intoxication’ is an attractive lilac Floribunda rose bred by renowned Hybridiser Dr. Keith W. Zary in the USA in 2008, using the Gold Medal winning rose ‘Perfume Perfection’ as one of the parent plants and Melody Parfumée ™. This rose was introduced in the United States by Jackson and Perkins in 2010 as ‘Sweet Intoxication’ and in Australia by Swane’s Nurseries in 2012.
‘Sweet Intoxication’ produces rich magenta blooms with a deeper colour in the centre, fading to lavender on the reverse side of the petals. This sweetly scented rose has an alluring, spicy clove fragrance – hence its name. The bush is tall and upright growing to 1.35m to 1.5m with healthy, glossy medium green foliage.
A versatile rose, ideal for garden beds, mixed borders, flowering hedge or use as a cut flower as the blooms are medium to large (average 10 cm diameter and 26-40 petals) formed in clusters of 6 to 10 per stem and have a long vase life. It is also suitable to grow in a large tub or patio container e.g. 60cm pot and it is great as a standard rose.

Shrub Rose
(Ausoil)
Combining the exquisite flowers and rich scent of Old World Roses with the repeat-flowering, disease resistance and wide colour range of Modern Roses, “English Shrub Roses” have become internationally renowned for their charm and fragrance. First launched onto the market 50 years ago, the collection of David Austin English Shrub Roses now numbers over 250 cultivars, rightfully taking their place among the world's most popular roses.
Introduced in 1983, Troilus is highly recommended for its large attractive blooms and unusual creamy-buff colouring. It is well suited to our climate as it thrives in very warm conditions and is reliable and healthy.
Troilus produces classic pointed shaped buds, opening to a very full, flat rosette formation with a strong, sweet, myrrh fragrance. It grows into an even, upright bush 1.5m x 1.5m with attractive dark green foliage and good disease resistance.
Troilus is an all-round good performer. It is easy to grow and makes an excellent choice for group plantings and borders, try planting it in a grouping of three for more impact. It creates a wonderful display of roses from the first spring flush through to the end of autumn.
A good cut flower for arrangements. Its vase life is reasonable for a shrub rose, with blooms lasting 3 to 4 days.
Available from Treloar Roses and Ross Roses.

Hybrid Tea
(MEIvildo)
This rose was bred by Marie-Louise (Louisette) Meilland and Jacques Mouchotte of Meilland International in France in 1983 and introduced in Europe as ‘Yves Piaget’ in 1985. Mr. Yves Piaget is a famous Jeweller and Patron of the World Federation of Rose Societies. The rose is also known as ‘Royal Brompton Rose’ and was introduced as ‘Queen Adelaide’ in Australia in 1986. Adelaide was the first Australian capital city to have a rose named for it.
Queen Adelaide has fully double, mauve-pink cupped shaped blooms with slightly ripple-edged petals (40 – 80 petals) in a globular form. It has a strong classic rose fragrance with a slight hint of Anise and Old World charm.
Queen Adelaide is a medium sized bush, 1.2 to 1.5 metres tall with a good growth habit and glossy dark green foliage, which is virtually thornless and blooms in flushes all throughout the season. Disease resistance is good in hot, dry climates and it enjoys a sunny position.
This popular rose has received many international awards and is a worthy addition to any rose garden. Queen Adelaide has been planted in numerous gardens by the Adelaide City Council.
Available from Wagner’s Rose Nursery, Newman’s Nursery, Ross Roses and Treloar Roses or order from your local Garden Centre.

Hybrid Tea
(MEIpikion)
‘Mother’s Love’ is a charming pink rose named to remind us of the memories and love shared by all mothers and to honour all mothers.
Bred by Meilland, in France, in 1999 and trialled in South Australia, ‘Mother’s Love’ was released in Australia in 2002 and is well suited to our climate.
This rose has a vigorous bushy habit and will grow to about 1.6m tall and 0.90m wide and is very hardy. Young shoots are bronze to reddish brown, which turn to a mid-green and the leaves usually appear to be glossy when they reach maturity. The buds are long and pointed; the large flowers appear as a light pink with slightly deeper pink centres. The flowers are approximately 12 cm in size with an attractive sweet rose fragrance.
The bush has good repeat flowering in flushes throughout the growing season, sometimes produced as a single bloom but more often as a cluster of blooms. It does require protection from frost in areas that are subject to heavy frost conditions.
This classic Hybrid Tea rose was originally launched to assist the Nursing Mothers’ Association of Australia (now Australian Breastfeeding Association) with part proceeds for the first 3 years from sales donated to the Association. According to Kathy Farrell, spokesperson for the Association, the funds were used “to ensure evidence-based information and support is available to all Australian mums and babies and to assist the ongoing work of the Australian Breastfeeding Association in the community”.
Available from Wagner’s Rose Nursery, Knight’s Roses, Newman’s Nursery (bush and standard), Swane’s Nurseries, Treloar Roses and Rosesalesonline.

Noisette
‘Lamarque’ was raised, so the story goes, by an amateur rose hybridiser in a window box in Angers, France. However, some experts regard Marechal as the Breeder who produced Lamarque in 1830 from a cross between ‘Blush Noisette’ and ‘Parks’ Yellow Tea-scented Rose. In modern catalogues today, it is regarded as an Old Garden Rose and classified as a Noisette.
It was named in honour of General Jean Maximilien Lamarque a French General (1770-1832). Following the revolution, his death was the catalyst for the Parisian June Rebellion of 1832 which provided the background for events depicted in Victor Hugo’s novel, “les Miserables”.
‘Lamarque’ is an exceptional climbing rose which is both healthy and hardy. It is a beautiful rose with blooms 7-8 centimetres in size which are borne in clusters and in great profusion. The white blooms have a yellow centre, are full and quartered and have a lovely, intense fragrance resembling violets.
This climber flowers profusely from spring well into autumn with a backdrop of smooth, mid-green leaves. It produces long trailing canes with small hooked prickles and can grow up to 6 metres in one year once established.
The use of ‘Lamarque’ as a tall weeper should also not be overlooked as its canes are pliable and tend to naturally cascade downwards. It also looks delightful when grown along a fence or over a large arch or trellis.
‘Lamarque’ loves our warm climate but if pruned too severely, it will sulk and produce few blooms. All that is needed is dead heading and the removal of dead wood.
This rose is available from Wagner’s Rose Nursery, Newman’s Nursery, Ross Roses and Treloar Roses.

Miniflora
Joyce Abounding is an extremely popular Australian bred Miniflora rose which has been awarded many prizes in Rose Shows across Australia, especially NSW and Victoria. The rose has many uses from mass planting, low hedges through to specimen plants either in the ground or featured in large pots. Bred by the Late Dr. Bruce Chapman of Melbourne, Joyce Abounding was released in 2012 by Ross Roses in South Australia.
“Miniflora” is a relatively recent classification of roses and covers a group of roses which are bigger than “Miniature” roses and smaller than “Floribunda” roses.
The classically shaped flower has a range of colours from yellow to apricot, through to mid pink and variations of each colour. Blooms are produced on short individual stems through to small clusters on a bush around 60cm tall and wide. Its flowering display is for eight months of the year, with the best range of colours in the cooler months. Health is excellent for most of the year. No noticeable scent available.
This rose is hardy and easy to grow. Ideal for small house blocks, units or even larger gardens, this rose is instantly appealing and will never let you down. It is also great for growing in pots.

Large Flowered Climber / Pillar Rose
(DELéri)
‘Nahema’ was bred by Georges Delbard, in France, from ‘Grand Siecle’ x ‘Heritage’ in 1991 and released in France in 2006. Nahema has established a reputation as one of the best fragrant climbers on the market and is well suited to our climatic conditions.
Nahema produces masses of highly fragrant and deeply cupped old-fashioned blooms with velvety petals of delicate almond blossom pink. This rose blooms in profusion throughout the season with a strong perfume of citrus, peach, apricot, pear and rose. The renowned perfume of the Guerlain range of perfumes is based on the essence of this rose.
The foliage tends to recurve which would suggest that the rose is too dry but this quirkiness makes the leaves readily identifiable. Despite this habit, the foliage is very strong and disease tolerant.
Nahema can be espaliered against a wall, used as a pillar rose or trained and bound to a verandah post. This is an ideal location because the rose has very few thorns and the perfume can be enjoyed. It repeat flowers well and will grow to a height of approximately 3 metres.
The flowers are sensational to use in flower arrangements because of their long vase life and as the petals drop, the perfume remains scattered around the base of the vase.
Available from Wagner’s Rose Nursery, Newman’s Nursery, Rankin Roses, Swane’s Nurseries and Silkie’s Rose Farm.

Hybrid Tea
Cocdestin
Bred by Alexander Cocker in Scotland and released worldwide in 1984.
Coppery orange with golden tones, this rose is an outstanding and novel colour in roses, but its popularity is because of the name ‘Remember Me’. It has become one of the special roses to plant in remembrance gardens or as a personal memorial to loved ones.
The blooms are of a classic Hybrid Tea form with flowers produced on single, long stems or small clusters on long stems carried evenly over the bush producing a most decorative plant.
Parentage is ‘Alexander‘and ‘Silver Jubilee’, two well-known roses in past decades and used as breeding parents in many of Cocker’s roses.
Growth is strong and upright around 1.5 metres tall by 1 metre wide. An outstanding feature of this rose is its abundance of glossy rich green foliage which has a high resistance to disease. ‘Remember Me’ blooms can change from a light russet/brown and increase in colour to deeper tones in the sun. The blooms have a lovely fragrance.
This rose was an award winner in the United Kingdom and Europe when first released. It was not released in Australia until many years later when it was introduced by Brundrett’s Roses in 1990.
South Australia’s George Thomson was an apprentice in Cocker’s Rose Nursery prior to coming to Australia and remembers Alex Cocker’s creation of this rose being part of his breeding group.
This popular rose is widely available from most major garden centres and all specialty rose nurseries including Ross Roses, Wagner’s Rose Nursery and Knight’s Roses, all proudly South Australian.

Hybrid Tea
‘Firefighter’ is a Hybrid Tea bred by Joseph Orard, in France, before 1998 and was introduced into the United States by Edmund’s Roses in 2005 as “Firefighter” and into Australia by Swane’s Nurseries in 2009.
This superbly scented red rose was named to honour the Firefighters who lost their lives on 11 September, 2001. The flower is a rich, fire engine red with 40 – 45 petals, an average diameter of 10 - 15 cm. and has strong tall stems with very few thorns. It is highly fragrant with an old rose fragrance. The bush is vigorous and upright and grows to 1.5m to 1.8m in height, has semi-glossy dark green foliage and blooms in flushes throughout the season.
Well suited to our hot summers, this rose holds up well even in intense heat, though cooler temperatures bring out the best colour. Fragrant red roses are difficult to find because they often get fungal diseases, but this rose resists disease with minimal spraying. The long lasting blooms and very few thorns make this rose ideal for floral arrangements.
A commemorative rose for Firefighters across Australia. ‘Firefighter’ commemorates the wonderful work our firefighters do here in Australia and as it states on the plant label: “This rose is so named to remember those men and women who risk their lives daily to protect ours”. The Australian release of this rose was planned for the winter of 2009 after the Black Saturday Victorian bushfires in February 2009.
Available from Newman’s Nursery, Wagner’s Rose Nursery, Swane’s Nurseries and Treloar Roses (both Standard and Bush Rose).

Floribunda
(PEJbigeye)
Looking for something completely different in a rose – well you’ve found it. ‘Eyes for You’ is certainly unusual and has caused great excitement in the rose world! It is so different the general public does not yet recognise this variety as a typical rose cultivar, despite the fact it was bred 14 years ago and introduced in the UK in 2009 and in Australia in 2012 by Brindabella in Queensland.
It took three decades of breeding using Hulthemia persica (syn. Rosa persica) to produce a rose with a fixed contrasting colour spot at the base of each petal, giving it the appearance of an ‘eye’ reminiscent of poppies and peonies. (R. hulthemia persica was found in Iran and taken to France in 1788.)
Jack Harkness in the UK began experimenting in 1974 to combine the eye of Rosa persica into modern roses to create a new style of rose. Unfortunately, the “persica” seedlings were weak, prone to disease and mostly sterile. Harkness produced one fertile seedling named “Tigris”.
In the 1980’s an English amateur breeder, Chris Warner, bought a plant of “Tigris” and began hybridising. Warner eventually made crosses with a rose named “Baby Love” because of its disease resistance. Warner produced 6 seedlings in 1986 however after years of hybridising with them nothing viable was produced. Luckily, Chris’ friend, amateur rose breeder Peter James hit the jackpot when he crossed one of these seedlings named ‘Tingle’ with his rose ‘Blue For You’ and created a pretty, perfumed Floribunda named ‘Eyes For You’.
This rose has clusters of cupped, semi-double, pale mauve-white blooms with a large deep purple eye at the base of each petal and attractive golden stamens. The rose has a lovely strong, fruity, damask fragrance. It grows to approximately 1m x 1m, has excellent repeat flowering, very healthy foliage, is easy to grow and is heat tolerant.
Years of hard work, good judgement and good luck combined to produce a truly wonderful new rose which makes a great display in the garden.

Hybrid Tea
(WEKblunez)
‘Heaven Scent’ with its large orchid pink blooms backed with intense Old Damask fragrance is an easy to grow rose with very few prickles. The rose was bred by Tom Carruth in 2002 and released in the USA by Weeks Roses in 2004 as ‘Memorial Day’. It was introduced in Australia by Swane’s Nurseries in 2005 as ‘Heaven Scent’. Its parentage is ‘Blueberry Hill’ x ‘Aotearoa’, both excellent roses in their own right.
‘Heaven Scent’ is a wonderful Hybrid Tea growing to approximately 1.5 metres tall by 1 metre wide, producing a large number of roses. Its upright growth and abundant, matte, medium green foliage complements the large blooms which open to an average of 11 centimetres in diameter with 41 -52 petals. The blooms borne mostly solitary and on long stems are a rich mix of pink, sometimes described as lavender pink or pink with an orchid wash with a darker reverse. This rose blooms in flushes throughout the growing season. The flowers and healthy foliage make for a great cut flower. The powerful fragrance sets it apart from many of its contemporaries.
A strong, hardy rose, it is largely bullet proof with its disease resistant foliage. The foliage is able to stand up to the hottest days in summer. The prickles are described as few, medium small and slightly hooked. The hips are moderately obovate and somewhat flat at the top.
Regular dead-heading will ensure a continuous succession of blooms.
‘Heaven Scent’ is available from Knight’s Roses, Wagner’s Rose Nursery, Treloar Roses, Swane’s Nurseries, Roses and Friends.
