2013 Rose of the Month

January

PLAYBOY

Floribunda

'Playboy' is an eye-catching, vibrant Floribunda rose bred by Cocker, in Scotland, in 1976. The burnt orange flowers are edged in scarlet and transition to a rich gold in the centre and turn a deeper colour as they age. The flowers are almost single with around 8 to 10 petals.

No-one is sure whether or not the rose was named after the popular men's magazine but Playboy, our Rose of the Month, has certainly been popular around the world, especially in the USA and Australia.

Its healthy, glossy, deep green foliage provides the perfect backdrop to attractive, large clusters of well spaced flowers. Each flower can be up to 10cm in diameter and in clusters of up to 24 blooms. The plant is disease resistant and produces flowers throughout the season but is at its best in Spring and Autumn.

Each plant is a well shaped 1.2m x 1.2m and it is great for a low hedge or high border.

'Playboy' creates a showy feature in any garden.

TINEKE

Hybrid Tea

'Tineke' is one of the best white roses available. Grown initially for the Florist Market, it has successfully made the transition from the glasshouse to the outdoors, where it has performed equally well in the home garden.

This classic Hybrid Tea Rose was bred by Select Roses BV, in The Netherlands in 1989, as a cut flower variety. It has been very popular with Florists for many years, especially due to its excellent longevity when used in arrangements.

The large white rounded buds have greenish tints on the guard petals and open to fully double, dazzling, pure white blooms with a very light fragrance. Tineke is a heavily petalled, high pointed, well shaped rose on long, straight stems with attractive dark green foliage.

Tineke is a very healthy rose, reasonably free of pests and diseases, growing to a height of 1.7m and a width of 1.2m. Quick to repeat flower, it is particularly good in the hot summer months and in the autumn.

This rose is a very reliable producer of many blooms in flushes throughout the season and there are not many better white roses for our climate. White roses are great to add amongst a colourful and vibrant rose garden theme.

GRAHAM THOMAS

Shrub Rose

'Graham Thomas' is David Austin's most popular rose around the world and was inducted into the WFRS Hall of Fame in 2009. Introduced in 1983, this, more than any other cultivar, has been responsible for the success of David Austin English Shrub Roses worldwide.

Graham Thomas is classified as a Shrub Rose. In Australia, it is best grown as a moderate sized climber or pillar rose. The growth is upright and bushy, and one plant can cover an area 2 m tall x 4 m wide given the right conditions - perfect for screening a fence or garage.

The rich yellow blooms are borne in profusion in spring and autumn with a sprinkling of flowers in between. Each flower is cupped shape with an intense, spicy Tea Rose fragrance. This rose performs well in our warm, dry climate and is reliable and healthy.

Named to honour Graham Stuart Thomas, one of the most influential gardeners and Rosarians of the 20th Century. His career spanned eight decades, he was also an author, artist and historian and is well known for his work popularising old and new shrub roses.

This multi-award winning rose will provide great pleasure as a feature in any garden.

BLACK MAGIC

Hybrid Tea

Black Magic is loved worldwide for its fascinating deep, dark red velvety colour and continuous flowering. The blooms are a classic rose shape with a high pointed centre and open to approximately 10 cm in size.  Blooms are carried on strong, very long stems and last well over one week when used as a cut flower. Black Magic is one of very few red roses to produce excellent blooms during our hot summers.

Black Magic was bred and introduced by Tantau in 1997.  Rosen Tantau, located in Northern Germany, has been breeding roses successfully for more than 100 years.  One of its specialties is the creation of Hybrid Tea Roses suitable for the garden and cut flower industry.  Black Magic has become very popular around the world as one of the best deep red roses which is relatively disease resistant. It grows into a tall, upright bush reaching 2m in height and produces many quality flowers throughout the entire season.

This fine, tall rose is well known as both a garden rose and a professional cut rose variety and will not disappoint. Bred for longevity, the bloom has very little fragrance.

EUROPEANA

Floribunda

The 1960s produced some magnificent new Floribunda roses, particularly red and orange flowered varieties. Bred in the Netherlands by De Ruiter in 1963, and introduced in 1968, 'Europeana' is a great example of a Floribunda Rose from this era.

Europeana is dark velvet crimson red with a mild tea rose fragrance. Stems carry well rounded clusters of up to 15 blooms with each flower measuring 7 - 9cm in diameter.  The new foliage is bronze red and ages to an attractive dark green and covers the entire bush. This character and its disease resistance ensures its suitability for low hedges, borders and massed planting.

The bush usually grows approximately 1m by 1.2m and it flowers prolifically throughout the entire season.

Europeana's pedigree has been rewarded with Gold Medals in The Hague and Portland Rose Trials and selection as the All-American Rose Selection top rose in 1968.  Highly regarded as one of the classics, few modern Floribunda Roses can match its overall performance.

IMP

Floribunda

Imp is a Floribunda Rose bred by an Australian,  George Dawson, and introduced in 1971. At that time, its showy rich red flowers with a silver reverse attracted immediate attention. These eye-catching flowers, produced in small clusters or singly, create a great display in the garden.  Imp's abundant flowers, hardiness and disease resistance have helped this rose to maintain its popularity for four decades.

The plant is a compact 1m high by 1m wide and yields a steady and consistent crop of flowers throughout the growing season after dead heads are removed. It thrives in our hot dry climate. The colourful blooms last well when picked and make an attractive display in floral arrangements.

There are not many significant and popular Australian bred Floribunda Roses and Imp justifiably deserves a place in our gardens.

THE SQUIRE

David Austin Rose

The David Austin English Shrub Rose 'The Squire' is one of the best performing red roses for sheer abundance of well shaped blooms which quickly repeat. Reliable and healthy, it thrives in our warm, dry climate creating a wonderful display. This rose is best planted in full sun.

Introduced in 1977 by David Austin Roses in the United Kingdom, this rose has stood the test of time in Australia and is still popular after nearly four decades. The large, velvety crimson red blooms have about 40 petals and a strong, classic old rose fragrance.

The Squire is an excellent shrub rose which grows into a hardy, medium-sized bush approx. 1.5m tall by 1.5m wide. It is a good example of a fully double rose variety and, again, highlights how important fragrance is to rose gardeners.

This rose is recommended by the Rose Society of South Australia.

FABULOUS!

Floribunda

(JACrex)

Bred by Dr. Keith Zary in California and released in 2001 by Jackson & Perkins, this pure white Floribunda rose has proved to be very successful in both the USA and Australia as it is well suited to hot climatic conditions.

This rose has masses of high pointed buds in large clusters, each bloom with 25 - 35 petals. It has a mild sweet fragrance and repeat flowers quickly after the spent blooms are removed. It features attractive dark green glossy foliage on a neat upright bush growing to 1.2 metres tall.

Interestingly, the parentage of this rose is Iceberg x Macrexy, and no doubt some of the best characteristics of Iceberg are seen in this delightful rose.

Fabulous! is ideal for mass planting, low hedges and edging garden beds. Fast to flower, easy to grow and very disease resistant, it is a great alternative for Iceberg where neat bushy roses are required.

MAGIC CARROUSEL

Miniature Rose

(MOORcar)

'Magic Carrousel' was bred in California, USA, by Ralph S. Moore in 1972.  Ralph Moore [1907-2009] is revered as the 'Father of Modern Miniature Roses' and produced over 500 varieties. He was an important contributor to the diversity of miniature roses and responsible for making them popular during his 60 year career.

Magic Carrousel is one of the great miniature roses which has come to Australia.  It is a neat bush growing 30 - 45cm in height, featuring high-centred blooms of creamy white with cerise red edges. The flowers have about 35 petals, an average diameter of 4 cm and a mild fragrance.

This healthy, attractive plant has glossy, leathery foliage and blooms in flushes throughout the season.

Magic Carrousel has form, colour and beauty making it ideal for garden borders, as a container grown rose or as a lovely standard.

GRUSS AN AACHEN

Floribunda

Gru?ss an Aachen has been in constant production since it was introduced in Germany, by Rose Breeder Philipp Geduldig, in 1909.  'Aachen' was the location of Geduldig's nursery, a historic city on Germany's western border.

This charming old-fashioned rose is well known for its dwarf growth, only reaching approximately 0.75cm, its creamy white fragrant rosette-shaped blooms and its capacity to repeat flower. The buds are orange-yellow and the flowers palest pink, fading to cream, on an excellent healthy bush with attractive rich green foliage. The blooms are usually 7 to 9cm in diameter, consisting of 40 to 45 petals and are borne in short-stemmed clusters with a slightly sweet fragrance.

Gru?ss an Aachen has interesting parents, namely the seed parent white Hybrid Perpetual Frau Karl Druschki and its pollen parent, the forgotten Hybrid Tea, Franz Deegan. However, Gru?ss an Aachen has never accurately fitted into the Hybrid Tea category. This rose bush resembles a neat shrub-like Floribunda and even though it predates the Floribunda class by decades, it is often classified as a Floribunda rose in modern reference books. Some experts regard Gru?ss an Aachen as "an early precursor of the popular David Austin English roses", but regardless of the category or classification, this superb heritage rose has over a century of history and many devotees.

FLAMINGO

Hybrid Tea

'Flamingo'  was initially released by German Rose Breeder, Kordes, as a cut flower rose. It is one of many cut flower Hybrid Tea roses to make the transition to the garden. Called 'Flamingo' as its colour matches its bird namesake, this rose was called 'Margaret Thatcher' in the UK.

Each stem carries one well shaped flower which lasts extremely well when cut for the vase. Each straight stem carries many plump thorns - the only negative feature of this rose.

Flamingo is well suited to our hot dry climate and is generally free of pests and diseases. It repeat flowers regularly and is particularly strong in our summer and autumn.

Each plant can have up to six dozen flowers each flush, ensuring the rose is a colourful feature in the garden. The plant grows to about 1.5m tall and 1m wide. A worthy rose making a beautiful display in both the garden and floral arrangements.
