South Australia’s Governors, A Rose for each. Rose Society of SA

SOUTH AUSTRALIA’S GOVERNORS, A ROSE FOR EACH

The challenge is to find a suitable rose variety for each of SA’s Governors.  The list may eventuate as a bed of roses within the grounds of Government House with a plaque to honour each of the Governors.

So listed below are the names of the thirty five governors, the term they served and a Wikipedia entry on each person.

So the RSSA is asking followers to suggest a rose for each person, included in this is the question does the rose represent the person or the era that the person served and we will leave that to you.

Please send your responses to our Facebook page

So here is an example

Brigadier General The Honourable Sir Alexander Gore Arkwright Hore-Ruthven VC KCMG CB DSO

Rose:
Zara Hore-Ruthren, Clark, 1932, a rich luminous pink hybrid tea, bred from the once very popular MME Abel Chatenay (Pernet-Ducher, 1895) and Clark’s 1922 Scorcher.

Reasons:
Lady Zara Hore-Ruthren (1879 – 1965)  (Countess of Gowrie) was the wife of Sir Alexander Hore-Ruthren VC,  (Earl of Gowrie), 20th governor. They were respectively the patroness and patron of the National Rose Society of SA.  I believe she opened the RSSA Spring Show around 1932.

Lady Zara was actively involved in early childhood education with a number of preschools bearing her name.  There is still a Lady Gowrie Child Centre at Thebarton.  Besides the Rose Society she also held positions with the Red Cross and Girl Guides.

Alister Clark as he tended to do, he donated his roses to charities. In the case of the rose, Zara Hore-Ruthren , Clark donated the profits from the sale of the rose to the SA Rose Society
